In Vermont, nothing says summer like a maple creemee. Yes, that’s “creemee.” Not “creamy.” OK, maybe “creamee.” But definitely not “soft-serve.”

Given that Vermont’s dairy and maple syrup industries are both award-winning and nationally renowned, combining the two just makes sense. That double whammy is the maple creemee. Here are some reasons why we love this New England summer treat, and some places where you can find the best maple creemees in Vermont.

Ode to the Vermont Maple Creemee

Picture it: You’re sitting at a picnic table overlooking the Vermont countryside. A few cows wander nearby, the pasture fence only a few feet from where you lounge. In your hand, an ice cream cone from which rises a twirled caramel-hued delicacy that’s threatening to drip — or slip — over the edge at any moment. The maple creemee is a beautiful thing to behold. And it’s even more wonderful to eat.

What is a maple creemee?

Slightly creamier than soft-serve but with a lower milk-fat content than traditional hard ice cream, these sweet spirals can be found throughout Vermont at a number of shops, food trucks, farm stands, and creameries. While recipes vary, most places simply add (real!) maple syrup to an ice cream base. Hard-core creemee lovers will attest to the importance of using the highest-quality maple syrup. While simplicity defines these classic confections, some places do serve maple creemees sprinkled with maple sugar or drizzled with maple caramel, or in the form of an ice cream sandwich.

What is the history of the maple creemee?

The origins of the name “creemee” remain unclear. Seeing as Vermont sits so close to the Canadian border, some theorize that it was inspired by the Québécois term for ice cream, crême glacée. But perhaps the title simply arose after years of people describing the food’s delightful creaminess.

Some claim that Rutland, Vermont, was the birthplace of the maple creemee. A letter to the editor published in the Rutland Herald some years back declared that the original idea for the maple creemee came from C. Blake Roy, markets inspector for the Vermont Department of Agriculture, who pitched it to the Rutland County Maple Producers in 1981 “as a new treat to be sold to thousands at the RCMP Rutland fairgrounds sugarhouse.” That said, like the delicacy itself, the backstory of the maple creemee remains mushy.

Where can I find a maple creemee?

Never tried this extra-creamy regional treat? Although for years it’s been rare to find one outside Vermont, maple creemee stands have begun to pop up in other New England states. Maine Maple Creemee Co., for instance, is a new food truck in Portland, Maine, that serves both maple and blueberry creemees.

The next time you’re in the Green Mountain State, though, be sure to visit one of these spots listed below to taste some of the best maple creemees in Vermont — dare we say, the “creem” of the crop.

The Best Maple Creemees in Vermont

Al’s French Frys | South Burlington, Vermont

With retro vibes and a robust menu of fried food and ice cream, Al’s will make you feel as though you’ve stepped back in time (and you likely won’t want to leave!). Yankee senior food editor Amy Traverso wrote about Al’s in 2014 — and we’re still as enthusiastic as ever.

Canteen Creemee | Waitsfield, Vermont

This standout not only serves up classic maple creemees, but it’s also concocted something called the “Bad Larry,” which is described as a “vertical sundae” and comes topped with maple cotton candy and cookie crumbs. (Looking for something savory after all that sugar? The fried chicken here is killer.) Canteen Creemee appeared in our 2018 Travel Guide as one of our Editors’ Picks for Food Lovers.

Creemee Stand | Wilmington, Vermont

One of the few southern Vermont spots on this list, Creemee Stand holds down the fort in Windham County. Located on Vermont’s scenic Route 100, this cash-only roadside stand has mastered the art of a classic maple creemee.

Morse Farm Maple Sugarworks | East Montpelier, Vermont

This family-owned business has been operating for eight generations in central Vermont. At the farm store in East Montpelier, you’ll find a smorgasbord of maple products, including an exceptional maple creemee.

Village Creemee Stand | Bristol, Vermont

With its sunny sign and yellow trim, Village Creemee Stand, practically screams summer. Almost every bit of space around the ordering window has been covered with handwritten signs and notes listing the many menu options. This place does creemees just right.

  1. Perhaps the writer is a Maple Creemee purest, but if you haven’t experienced the Maple Coffee Creemee Twist offered at the Gladstone Creamery in Fairlee, you have not truly felt dessert euphoria. Mac’s Maple Creemees are also pretty hard to beat and are only just across the river in Plainfield NH (I am a regionalist in terms of great cremes!)

  2. The best Maple Creemee hands down is MacNamara’s (Mac’s Maple) in Plainfield, NH, not too far from the VT border. And get it with the maple sugar crunchies. Yum!

  3. Palmer Lane Maple in Jericho. Outstanding pure maple creemee with maple candy crunchy bits on top. Order a maple sundae and in addition to crunchies, pure maple syrup drizzled throughout. THE BEST. Lots of maple and other delicioys products for sale. Gluten-free cones available for their GF maple creemee, and the place is NUT FREE. A huge relief for parents dealing with nut allergies.

  4. Chelsea Royal Diner in Brattleboro, VT! The creamies are made with local maple syrup. Also homemade hard maple cream & maple walnut!

  5. Allenholm Farm in South Hero, VT. It’s not overly sweet and comes in a bite size “baby” version that’s just right.

  6. Hands down best maple creamee on the planet is Mac’s Maple, Plainfield,NH ???????????? They use real maple sugar candies for their sprinkles!

    1. I absolutely agree, my whole family has scoured VT and NH this summer and we agree that Mac’s Maple in Plainfield is the best. Super creamy, maple candy sprinkles and freshly made waffle cones!

  7. Our family favorite REAL Vermont Maple creemee, for generations is @ The Bragg Farm in East Montpelier!!!!

    1. Maple creemee at Bragg Farm in East Montpelier is the very best. It’s where the locals go to get the best creemee in Vermont!

    2. Agree! We always stop at Braggs to load up on Maple Syrup and Maple Creemies!!
We love stopping by in March during the Maple Festival!! Lots of sugar shacks are open with tastings and fun activities.

  8. You’ve completely left off most of central and southern Vermont. We’ve done our own local taste testing, and Otter Creek Fun Center in Danby is hands down the best for both creamy texture and intense mapleness! They make their own. Open year round.

  9. The best I’ve tasted is at Green Mountain Sugar House,Rte 100N,Ludlow VT. Super
    delicious maple creemees…

    1. Agree, Green Mountain Sugar House in Ludlow is fantastic. As a producer of maple syrup, they are in a unique position to source the highest quality ingredients. Opened year round with seating over looking the pond makes for a great treat.

      1. I took my 2 1/2 year old granddaughter there for her first one this past summer. She loved it as much as her mother and I.

    1. Every time we go to Dakin Farm to pick up our supply of Maple cured bacon and pepperoni, we leave with their Maple Yogurt Creemee. You would not think it’s yogurt because it’s real maple syrup flavor and Creaminess, makes this place my favorite.

  10. Dutton’s Farm Stand, 2083 Depot St., Manchester, VT is our personal favorite! Perfect consistency and no doubt made with high quality maple syrup. We live in Manchester and it is our go-to place for local produce, home baked goods, plants/flowers and their fabulous maple creamee‘s!

  11. I grew up in NE. relatives in all the states. Moved to ca in 1962 still miss things like maple creemee, lobster rolls, clam cakes and coffee frappes. Coffee ice cream is found sporadically. There is now a tiny Lobster West restaurant in Encinitas, CA. Rolls are just the best. Owners are from NE have buns made exactly like NE ones. Everyone agrees these are the best. They are NOT filled with lobster salad or rock lobster(which I think has a fishy taste and is not as firm S Maine lobster. This little restraint now has another one on Coronado Island. You can get just the roll or with two sides. Baked beans and coleslaw. My great-grandson has become a great fan!!

  12. thanks Lynn for tip on Dutton’s, not too far from us in Northern N.Y.We have a new conserved dairy farm that carries Maple Milk, called Battle Hill Dairy, organic too..wonderful!Any more tips for Creemees in So. Vt.?

  13. Allenholm Orchard in South Hero has awesome Maple Creemees. Ray Allen and his family operate their family’s farm. Allen, and the Orchard, are both decended from the Allen brothers who commanded the Green Mountain Boys militia during the American Revolution. Great folks, great place, oh, and great pies too. A true Yankee experience.

  14. Without doubt the best maple creemee is on Route 7 in St. Albans at Duke’s Creemees. They use the St. Albans Co-op creemee mix and real maple syrup; the best way to make a creemee. Since moving out out state 20 years ago, I still look forward to returning every summer and getting at least two or three while I’m in town.

  15. Can’t wait to get back to Westmoreland, NH and find the closest place to have my first taste of maple creamee, have not heard of it before.

  16. So where would be the closest place in VT to drive and get one of these from Providence RI? I LOVE anything maple!!!! Thanks

  17. K’s Creamery in Stamford, Vermont, ice cream/homemade donut shop in Southern Vermont just over the MA border, Maple Creemees are the best! Can’t wait for summer! 🙂

  18. Just heard about maple creemees on Channel 9 News. I live in Gilford New Hampshire. Where can I drive to the closest maple creemee. Many thanks. Happy Spring. Bruce

  19. Wish someone would post a map of places – the 251 Club did one several years ago !

  20. P&H truck stop in Wells River sells Maple Cream Pie. You can take home a slice or a whole pie !!! Yum, Yum!!!

  21. 2 days ago I went to Creamee Stand in Wilmington, and yesterday I went to Dutton’s farm stand in Manchester….both maple soft serves were good, but have to say I liked Dutton’s better….

  22. As the daughter of C. Blake Roy I can attest that my father did indeed work to develop the Vermont Maple Creemee. I can also remember him experimenting with a candy cotton machine to make the now popular maple cotton candy. My father also made dry maple sugar as it had been made generations ago. Now this sugar is a popular ingredient in many shakers and dry rubs for meat.

  23. Don’t forget about Legendairy Maple & Ice Cream in Williamstown, VT. They are the largest dairy bar in VT with the biggest selection. They have their own Sugarbush and use their maple syrup in the products they make. The hard ice cream is homemade as well. They have the creamiest creemee you will ever have and the maple creemee will make your taste buds explode 🙂

  24. South Hero has two gems-Allenholm Farm and Seb’s. The latter offers arguably the largest I have ever seen. Both are worth the visit!
