I consider my-notice the ownership-“my” PBS channels to be sacrosanct! I have watched them as long as I have had access to them and “grew my children up” on the invaluable content from practically the moment they were born! There is, thankfully, corporate and private trusts, singletons, or couples with the wherewithal to be regular large donors that helps immensely. Thank be to all for the continued support! PBS Channels count on the public giving- the personal contributions, that everyday people make to the local PBS stations. Times have been hard for these people especially since 2016 and truly difficult since January of 2017. Continuing through early 2020 the leftovers were shaping the giving ability of middle-of -the -road Americans and the damage it having to be slowly worked through! PBS fosters learning, understanding, truth in their shows regarding nature, people, animals, music, documentaries, and shows that are beloved and so well done! I am fortunate to live in a place where I am able to get two states PBS channels! That is because I am literally on the line between these two states! There are two alternatives that carry many of the same programming, though not all. They are listed as CREATE TV. I am able to get two channels of that and I am thrilled by that! Sometimes they have content that the ordinary-hah, anything but- PBS channels do not carry. So I am blessed to have these options. I would suggest looking for CREATE TV and also, letting your state government know, one by one OR better yet, getting a campaign going to reach all the same “peeps” like Y-O-U, and word the “ask” professionally and legitimately, signed by tens of thousands and then hopefully, hundreds of thousands of people who want the same thing-the thing of value that PBS means. So many cannot afford even the smaller donor amounts-which always come with some type of gift and the true gift of being able to watch PBS. I then suggest that any dollar amount, even a single dollar, hopefully 2-better 4 or $5.00, to at least vote your say with a “buck”-and a signed and sent serious request- en masse, and do not stop! So, organize! and then, organize some more! Make your pleas heard, get someone to pay attention! Be the squeaky wheel. It is really important. You know it, you have said so in different states-there re so many more like you where you live-you simply do not know that yet. I fear for all of us, our intellect, our curiosity, the great information, entertainment and ability to learn and share with our kids and grandkids, the wonders that PBS brings us all. Write to Ken Burns for advice. Think about “All Creatures Great and Small” and write the directors, the actors, the producers-think of “As Time Goes
By” with Dame Judith-think of the nature shows by the wildlife experts in your state and how long they have been doing their work-actually fun disguised as work-how fortunate we should all be to have that as our path. Nevertheless, many-probably most-have or did have fairly ordinary jobs and/or careers that give them the ability to pursue, even a little bit, the things they love to do-a means to the end, so to speak. Maybe they love to hike, ride bikes, see fabulous gardeners and artists and chefs, and there are jobs to be had when PBS exists, too. I know some people personally that were fortunate enough to work at the local PBS channel in the State’s capital. On CREATE, there are shows from many other states-forgot to mention that before! I feel your words meanings-the outcry for these quality channels and I hope that people can get going and let the powers that be-(good grief) know what you need. I say it is an actual need. It is a int however to go further in our fragile planet, we need these people, this info, these commitments and knowledge-and I mean we need them yesterday! Amen? Thanks for letting me be on the soapbox-but I had to learn how to be the squeaky wheel because of my health and then really strenuously for my daughter’s health- for several decades! And she cut her teeth on these shows with Mom! Became a fine citizen and a person who knew herself and was avidly curious about the world around her- and beyond!
