Notable New England Film Locations
These New England film locations are Tinseltown-approved. Film buffs, Stephen King fans, and sightseers alike will love this list!

Mystic Pizza, Mystic | New England Film Locations
Photo Credit: Annie GravesThere is a special sort of satisfaction that comes from knowing you’ve visited the locations of your favorite films. Even more gratifying is seeing a place you know and love appear alongside Leonardo DiCaprio or Brad Pitt. New England may be a far reach from the bright lights of Hollywood, but every once in a while, we do make an award-winning appearance.

Oftentimes, filmmakers will come and go silently without actors — or even directors — ever setting foot here. They’ll gather aerial footage of our picturesque towns and make a swift return to the California coast. Occasionally, though, New England lures in a big studio, charms a director, and earns a little extra screen time. They may have sandy beaches and endless sunshine in California, but New England has a seasonal magic you can’t find anywhere else.
Here is our list of the “must-see” New England film locations!
Notable New England Film Locations
Maine Film Locations
Maine, home to the infamous Stephen King, is often the backdrop of horror films. Lake Placid (1999), The Mist (2007), The Uninvited (2009), and Dark Shadows (2012) all take place in quintessential small towns of Maine, and with few exceptions, Maine is used for the stuff of nightmares. Despite the dark themes, the filmmakers have managed to pick some incredible sights.
Otter Cliff, Acadia National Park | Shutter Island (2010)
Martin Scorsese used Otter Cliff in Acadia National Park to film the cliff scenes in Shutter Island, which was set off the coast of Massachusetts.

In Pet Semetary, author Stephen King has a cameo as a minister presiding over a funeral in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Massachusetts Film Locations
Massachusetts is booming with film activity — it’s no wonder the Boston/Cambridge area is sometimes referred to as “Hollywood East.” A lengthy list of films have used this state as a location. Just to give you an idea: Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf (1966), Flowers in the Attic (1987), The Fighter (2010), Ted (2012), Captain Phillips (2013), The Heat (2013), The Judge (2014), Black Mass (2015), Spotlight (2015), Ghostbusters (2016), Little Women (2019)— and that’s just scratching the surface. Making a final selection was tough, but these film locations won’t disappoint.
The Ropes Mansion, Salem | Hocus Pocus (1993)
The classic Halloween film Hocus Pocus was filmed all over Salem, MA. The Ropes Mansion, operated by the Peabody Essex Museum, is one of those many places. You can even attend a walking tour that will point out other film locations, as well as Salem’s historic and haunted past.

Boston Public Garden | Good Will Hunting (1997)
Good Will Hunting was filmed in several locations around Boston. In the film, Will Hunting (Matt Damon) and Sean Maguire (Robin Williams) share a scene in the Boston Public Garden. This area served as a memorial after Williams’ passing in 2014.

Jaws Bridge, Martha’s Vineyard | Jaws (1975)
With the filming of Jaws on Martha’s Vineyard in 1975, Steven Spielberg made “Jaws Bridge” famous. Today, swimmers use the bridge as a makeshift diving board to jump into the cool (and shark-free) waters below.

Connecticut Film Locations
Connecticut, with its proximity to New York City, is second only to Massachusetts when it comes to film activity. Many well-known films have hit its streets, among them: Mr. Deeds (2002), Jacknife (1989), The Stepford Wives (1975), and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008).
Danbury Railway Museum | Strangers on a Train (1951)
Alfred Hitchcock’s 1951 film Strangers on a Train was partially filmed at the Danbury Railway Station. The station has since been turned into a museum. If you look closely at this still from the film, you can see a sign for the “Danbury Diner,” which is still there to this day! The family-owned restaurant is now called The Holiday Diner.
Kent, CT (Litchfield County & Fairfield County) | My Soul to Take (2010)
Wes Craven chose Kent, Connecticut, and surrounding areas for filming his 2010 horror flick, My Soul to Take. An area north of Bull’s Bridge on Schaghticoke Road was used for an ambulance crash and ritualistic scenes. Several other towns in Connecticut were used for filming, including Danbury, New Milford, Fairfield, Norwalk (Cranbury Park area), and Tolland (Tolland High School).
Mystic Pizza, Mystic | Mystic Pizza (1988)
Okay, I may have cheated a little here. Mystic Pizza wasn’t filmed in Mystic Pizza. Rather, the restaurant was the inspiration for the movie. The filming did, for the most part, take place in Mystic, CT. The scenes inside the restaurant had to be filmed on a set because the real location was too small.

New Hampshire Film Locations
Films set in New Hampshire are an eclectic mix, most of which involve Adam Sandler. But films that actually use New Hampshire as a location? Well, there aren’t too many. However, if you live here (or if you’ve taken a film class at Keene State College), you won’t fail to hear about the state’s several claims to fame.
Main Street, Keene | Jumanji (1995)
There’s an infamous scene in Jumanji in which jungle animals stampede through the fictional town of Brantford. That moment was filmed in Keene, NH, and if you watch closely, you may recognize some of the shops and landmarks. Also in Keene, you’ll find a mural advertising the Parrish Shoes company from the film. It was taken down after filming and then repainted later on. After Robin Williams passed, it served as a memorial.

Mirror Lake, Jackson | The Good Son (1993)
There’s a scene in The Good Son in which Henry (played by Macaulay Culkin) takes his sister ice skating and attempts to kill her. This was filmed in Jackson, NH, on Mirror Lake. Another scene was filmed in Newington, NH.

Squam Lake, Holderness | On Golden Pond (1981)
On Golden Pond takes place in Maine, but the movie was largely filmed on New Hampshire’s Squam Lake.
Rhode Island Film Locations
Like Maine, Rhode Island’s stunning coast is primarily what attracts filmmakers to the area. The state’s seaside towns and nostalgic views have a charm you can’t quite capture anywhere else.
Rosecliff Mansion, Newport | Great Gatsby (1974), True Lies (1994), Amistad (1997), 27 Dresses (2008)
The Rosecliff Mansion in Newport, RI, is used in several films. If you happen to take the tour, you’ll have no trouble seeing why.

Jamestown, Newport, & Prudence Island | Moonrise Kingdom (2012)
Wes Anderson was all over Rhode Island filming Moonrise Kingdom, so it’s difficult to pin down just one place. However, if you watch the film you may recognize a few locations, including Fort Wetherill State Park, Castle Hill Lighthouse, and Point Judith Light.

Vermont Film Locations
Vermont generally appears on film as the perfect winter wonderland. However, as New Englanders know, winter is not always so picturesque and the weather hardly cooperates with our wishes. Therefore, scenes like this often get shot on a lot in Hollywood. There hasn’t been much film bustle in Vermont in recent years, but it was the scene of a few classics.

I was working for the food service provider during the filming at Middlesex School (very exclusive prep school) and it was quite the spectacle when they filmed the dining room scenes! They also sprayed white foam of the grass in the commons area that ended up killing the grass! They replaced it however with turf etc. They had their own catering trucks provide food to the cast and crew and all of the filming for the cafeteria was done at night so they did not interrupt the students activities. It was quite memorable to say the least.
How did we miss “The Perfect Storm” shot in Gloucester, MA and the recent award-winning “Manchester by the Sea” filmed in Manchester, MA? Both brilliant depictions of those lovely towns and their people.
Many scenes in “Manchester by the Sea” were filmed in Beverly, Massachusetts. Independence Park, Central Cemetary, exterior of Beverly Hospital, Grondin Funeral Home
Also, Fiber McGee’s bar.
Your forgot Camden ME: Payton Place was shot in Camden Maine and many residents were hired as extras. We were children at the time. We were part of the crowd. My brother had an old car that he drove in the parade. My neighbor’s daughter played a part as Selena. She had to roll down a step hill as a stand in and ended up with quite a case of poison ivy. In the Hallmark Channel movies there is a shot of downtown Camden that is used over and over in different movies.
David Spade, Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, John Lithgow, Mark Wahlberg and Mel Gibson are in Clinton, Massachusetts NOW, filming TODAY at the Old Timer on Church Street.

Also, “Blow” with Johnny Depp & Ray Liota few scenes greater Boston area. Ben Affleck in “Live By Night” in mingya Lawrence & in and around Mingya valley. A little off topic but peripheral: google “Rob Corddry’s Boston” riffs on the majestic Adams Inn. Also Melissa McCarthy & Sandra Bullock filmed “The Heat” in town. Movie was actually pretty funny—included Bill Burr, Joey McIntyre (from Boston’s own New Kids On The Block, (Rob Corrdry’s brother, something Corrdry). Also one last one: “Stuck On You” with Matt Damon & Greg Kinnear has parts on the Vineyard, (might be Oak Bluffs?), anyway not many people know this but if you check out the scene when they’re filming the pilot TV show with Cher—the two camera techs are none other than Tom Brady & Lawyer Malloy. Also John Dennis & Jerry Callahan make an worthy appearance reminding you why they stuck to radio (John Dennis was in King Pin too & he didn’t suck in that). There’s a bunch of other stuff I could go on for days

The old Naval prison at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (actually in Kittery, ME) was in “The Last Detail” with Jack Nicholson. When Hitchcock got to Craftsbury to film The Trouble With Harry, he found that the maple leaves had already begun to turn brown and fall. The art department had to have the leaves painted so that the leaves would not be past peak. The little boy in the first scene and throughout the movie is none other than Jerry Mathers aka Beaver Cleaver.

The Friends of Eddie Coyle with Robert Mitchum had many scenes on the South Shore of Mass, like Sharon, Dedham, Quincy, Weymouth, as well as several areas of Boston, like City Hall, Newbury Street, Boston Bowl in Dorchester, old Boston Garden.
3 Comments: First: believe Peyton Place producer/director wanted the film to be made in Woodstock Vermont, but the locals did not want such a movie to be made using Woodstock in the background. Second: Could the mansion used a hospital in :Cider House Rules” be in the Berkshires? Third: my brother and his friend were returning from trimming trees, with the saw in the back of a Nash Metropolitan. They were stopped in Concord, Mass. during the filming of “Never too Late”. they were asked if they wanted to be in a movie? The said sure. The person asked them to keep looking straight ahead where they were filming. My brother saw the move but he and the car were not in the movie. My brother sid “He was a face on the Cutting Room Floor”.
Typo correction in comment three about filming of Peyton Place: should have been “they sais yes”. spell check can’t do everything.
The movie On Golden Pond was supposed to take place on Lake Winnipesaukee with a Wolfeboro, NH address, not in Maine! I am aware it was filmed on Squam Lake in NH. I was born in NH and lived there through college and visited one of my mothers’ cousins’ summer homes, he owned Welch Island for many years on Lake Winnipesaukee and we visited him there several times, which was really fun!!!!!!!!!!! He had a player piano and let us use it as much as we wanted to!!!!!!!!!!! For some reason it rained a lot while we were visiting, and he didn’t have a tv there, so it was really fun playing board games and listening to his player piano! That island was only accessible by boat and he had a very nice one!!!!!!!!!!!!
Parts of Baby Boom were filmed on Main Street, North Benninton, VT
North Bennington, VT was site for scenes of Baby Boom
What about the movie “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor that had scenes from Smith College in Northampton, MA. I was at UMASS at the time and remember it well.
We know a man my husband knew from his work, who worked with my husband at his company, who grew up in Mystic, CT. He showed us “the real Mystic Pizza” many years ago!!!!!!!!!!!!! I also know the young lady who played Kat in that movie has the last name Gish. While I attended UNH the college hired many people to give free performances. One of those performances was given by Lillian Gish, who was 90 years “young” at that time. She was a very petite and very pretty, with a very sweet face, lady. Kat most likely is one of her descendents. Kat does not look anything like Lillian, however!
Annabeth Gish is not related to Lillian Gish or her sister Dorothy. The Gish sisters never married and, as far as anyone knows, never had children. You’re right, though, about Lillian being a beauty all her life. I saw her on Phil Donahue she she was at least in her late 80s and probably 90s, she was simply lovely. Lillian died in 1993 at the age of 99.
I saw Lillian alongside Helen Hayes at a Broadway production of “The Constant Wife” which was starring Ingrid Bergman in 1979? 0r 1980? Anyhow they held the curtain for them two of them, and I assume they went backstage to visit their friend, Ingrid Bergman. At that point they were two little old ladies, but I was a typical teen, everyone over 40 was old to me. But you could see what grand ladies they were, an aura surrounded them
While studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1970,Lillian Gish came to speak to us and yes, she was so lovely , sweet and very grand!
The book On Golden Pond which the movie is based on is about a lake in Maine. I know because I grow up on that lake. I knew the mailman that delivered to the camps on the lake and the spot where they fished and where the camp was located. That was the basis of the story. It was a made up story but about a true lake in Maine that people from the community would recognize.
Ernest Thompson wrote On Golden Pond based on his summers on Great Pond in Belgrade, Maine. It was a play not a book. The film On Golden Pond, though set in Maine, was actually filmed on Squam Lake in NH.
Man in a Net, with Alan Ladd, filmed in and around Thompson and Woodstock CT.
Peyton Place (1957) in Camden, Maine. Also, Rockland, Maine, and Gilmanton, New Hampshire.
Peyton Place opening scene was of Warren, Rhode Island.
“Those Calloways” filmed off Smugglers Notch Road in Jeffersonville, VT!!!!
The original “Thomas Crowne Affair” starring Steve McQueen, the sail plane scene was shot in Salem, NH. The air park is gone now and replaced by a golf course.
Correction: the filming of Mystic Pizza didn’t take place in Mystic except for the drawbridge scene. The rest of the movie was filmed in Noank and Stonington Borough.
Otto Preminger filmed a movie with Liza Minnelli as the female lead in Blue Hills Cemetery in Braintree Mass. My father was a Braintree police officer and worked the detail. We still have his check, paid and signed by Otto.
The movie Funny Farm with Chevy Chase was filmed in Townsend, Vermont.
I enjoyed reading this article, however there is a very important location not mentioned. Rockport, MA. Maybe there wasn’t enough space to list all the television shows and movies filmed there through the years. Mermaids, Love Letter, I’ll Be Home for Christmas (TV) for example.
Rockport was also used for “Alaska “ scenes in The Proposal.
Osmosis Jones with Bill Murry was filmed in Plymouth, MA
All filmed in Northampton, Mass: “Malice” (Nicole Kidman and Alec Baldwin), “Sylvia”(Gwynneth Paltrow as Sylvia Plath) and “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” with Elizabeth Taylor

Spitfire Grill was filmed in Peacham, Vt. A scene from Forest Gump was filmed in Craftsbury, Vt, parts of Beetlejuice and What Lies Beneath were filmed in Vermont
Spitfire Grill is one of my altimeter favorites! I could watch it again and again. Lots of small home time personality dynamics!
“The Last Detail” with Jack Nicholson and Randy Quaid, the cookout scene was filmed in Prescott Park in Portsmouth, NH and “The Preachers Wife”, filmed in Portland, Maine, I was asked to be in a background scene in front of the courthouse where there was a small pond. I had to decline.
“Other People’s Money” (1991) with Gregory Peck and Danny DeVito, includes scenes filmed in Seymour, CT. The Jane Fonda and Robert DeNiro film “Stanley and Iris” (1990), used locations in Waterbury, CT.
Wasn’t a scene from “The Witches of Eastwick” filmed In Scituate Harbor, Mass?
Cohasset MA
Yes, Cohassett.
I believe Mel Gibson filmed a couple of films in Maine. Rockland and Bar Harbor?
Love Story!!! with Ali McGraw and Ryan O’Neil. “Love means never having to say you’re sorry” Loved the scene when they were in a convertible driving on the now gone elevated central expressway. Cambridge and Boston
Two that missed the list…

“Edge of Darkness” was filmed in a number of locations in Massachusetts including Merrimac and Rockport on the North Shore.

“Sea of Trees” was filmed in Purgatory Chasm, Sutton, MA.
Hope Springs starring Merryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones, and Steve Carrell were filmed in Stonington Borough, Connecticut.
Yes. Love this film.
Ok….Shutter Island is not correctly being spoken about here….it was shot for the cliff scenes in Maine in Arcadia Ntl. Park (Otter Cliff) HOWEVER, The asylum is in Medfield Mass. At Medfield State Hospital, where a multitude of films have been shot, you can actually see where the added roadways & psuedo sidewalks that seem to just disappear into the grass now, the town of Medfield allows people to walk around there, just don’t even think about going into the tunnels or buildings, they will arrest you….The drowning of the children was filmed in Easton, MA. At Borderland State Park, take a walk past the now defunct pool & eventually you’ll find yourself at the lake beside the cabin pictured in the movie.
“The Legend of Lucy Keyes”, Princeton, Ma also one way back starring June Allison, using scenes Fitchburg, Ma. airport. A true story about an military man WWII sorry I just can’t remember the title.

“The Lightkeepers” with Richard Dreyfuss, Mamie Gummer & Blythe Danner was, in part, filmed in Chatham, MA & various other parts of Cape Cod. Of course, “The Social Network”, loosely documenting the beginning of Facebook, was, in part, filmed in Boston & Somerville, although filming is no longer allowed on the campus of Harvard University.
We must include the movie”Peter Proud.” It was an okay movie about reincarnation set mostly in Springfield, MA, with a few shots in Holyoke. The nighttime lake scenes were shot in the Art Linkletter Natatorium pool at Springfield College, my alma mater.
One can also get a glimpse of the iconic bridge between Springfield and West Side.
Not a bad movie. Worth searching for during the C-virus self-quarantine period!
Jim Kisser
Thanks Jim, I was thinking about “The Reincarnation of Peter Proud” when I saw this article. Having lived in the Springfield and Chicopee for a number of years the movie was kind of a “claim to fame” in that area along with Dr. Seuss and some others.
A wonderful film, that no one seems to have seen, was 1989’s “Signs of Life”. It was shot in Stonington, ME AND
A wonderful film, that no one seems to have seen, was 1989’s “Signs of Life”. It was shot in Stonington, ME and in and around the Blue Hill Peninsula and Ellsworth, ME. It had an incredible ensemble cast of actors – Arthur Kennedy (he died shortly after completion), Kathy Bates, Beau Bridges, Vincent D’Onofrio, Mary-Louise Parker, Will Patton, Kevin J. O’Connor, Kate Reid and one of the best performances I have ever seen of a mentally-challenged young man. The film is nearly impossible to find, but it is well worth the effort. A true sleeper!
The 1963 Otto Preminger film “The Cardinal” was filmed at least partly in Boston. It starred Tom Tryon, now better known as a novelist. My father, who had an antique 1912 Model T was among several car club members who drove down Beacon Street in a scene from the movie
‘Baby Boom’ also filmed in Manchester, Vermont.
A favorite of mine. ????
The pond scenes with Christina Ricci in the movie “Mermaids” was filmed in my home town of N. Easton, MA. I was coming home from work and on N. Main St., there was barricades and large black buses and vehicles with flood lights in the street. Had to take a detour.
I believe The Stand (1994) was shot at Ogunquit ME. Where Fannie and her father lived.
The address 27 Beach St. but uncertain..
